The company said today (3 June) that the facility in Modesto would produce organic soymilk and other aseptic beverages.
The project is a sign of SunOpta’s plans to expand its business despite the ongoing investigation into auditing at its berry operations. The cost of the probe has caused the company to issue profit warnings in recent weeks.
Allan Routh, president of SunOpta’s grains and foods group, said the company will be able to produce up to 300m quarts of soymilk across two sites – in Modesto and a packaging facility in Minnesota.
“Demand for organic soymilk and other beverages from SunOpta’s vertically integrated aseptic packaging operations continues to grow,” Routh said.
