US retail giant Supervalu Inc said today (29 March) that it would look to sell its Bigg’s by the end of May.

The company has agreed to offload six Bigg’s outlets and their pharmacies in and around Cincinnati to local retailer Remke Markets. Each of these stores will be supplied by a Supervalu distribution centre in Ohio. Financial details were not disclosed.

Supervalu said it plans to close its five remaining Bigg’s stores by the end of May. Prescription files at one store will be transferred to a Remke Markets outlets. Supervalu said an unnamed local company would take on the files at the four other stores.

“We look forward to working with the Remke organisation through our supply relationship as they strengthen their overall presence in the marketplace,” said Janel Haugarth, Supervalu executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Minneapolis-based company’s supply chain services organisation.

A spokesperson for Supervalu declined to comment further when contacted by just-food.
