US discounter Save-A-Lot plans to open five stores in Chicago’s South Side on Thursday (24 February), a move that it says will nearly double its presence in the area.

With the openings, the Supervalu Inc subsidiary will operate some 13 stores in the Chicagoland area.

The company also revealed plans to open five further outlets by February 2012.

“Chicago long has been a priority market for Save-A-Lot, and we’re thrilled to be adding five more South Side stores,” said Save-A-Lot CEO and president Bill Shaner. “These locations are a perfect match with our strategy of bringing affordable groceries and more fresh-food options to neighbourhoods with few existing grocery stores.”

The stores range in size from 11,000-21,000 square feet and are located in formerly vacant retail properties, which Save-A-Lot has renovated.

The retailer has also announced a series of store closures in recent months, announcing the closure of some some 29 Shaw’s, Acme and Shoppers outlets during the fourth quarter.
