US retailer Target Corp. will put more emphasis on food in the 21 general-merchandise stores it plans to open in 2011.

Target’s store openings cover 12 states and, while the bulk are general-merchandise stores, the retailer said the outlets would carry more food.

“The general merchandise stores will include an expanded fresh food assortment, providing greater convenience and value to guests. At about 135,000 square feet, the stores will offer basic fresh produce, fresh packaged meat and baked goods, and employ 100 to 250 team members,” the retailer said yesterday (12 January).

As part of the openings, Target also plans to open a new store under the larger SuperTarget banner in Minnesota. The store, covering 174,000 square feet, will feature “a full-line, full-service supermarket”, Target said.

Target has indicated that it is expanding its grocery offer to consumers. In September, Target said it would “aggressively” roll out more fresh food to several hundred more stores this year.
