The US Food and Drug Administration has traced tomatoes contaminated with salmonella to a number of farms in Florida and Mexico, while investigations are continuing in Texas.
The number of people who contract salmonella could continue to rise as the outbreak has not yet been contained, the FDA indicated.
In an attempt to contain the outbreak, the food safety watchdog has now dispatched teams of experts to conduct farm and supply chain inspections in Florida and Mexico.
The FDA was unavailable for further comment as just-food went to press.
