Two Archer Daniels Midland employees died of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning and nine others were sickened following a fire at the firms Decatur plant on Sunday evening.

The deceased have been named as Jeff Miller, a corn plant lab technician and 17-year employee of ADM, and Chuck Newgard, a corn plant lab technician supervisor and veteran of 30 years.
ADM reported today that 16 additional ADM employees and eight firefighters were taken to local hospitals in Alabama. Of those, 15 have been released and another is continuing to receive medical attention. A spokesperson for ADM said all are expected to recover fully.
Randy Kampfe, vice president of ADM’s corn processing group, said: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleagues. Our thoughts are with their families and friends.”
The Decatur Ambulance Service was called to rescue and treat employees who had collapsed in and around the quality control lab of the corn plant. Fire officials found a fire had occurred in an air-handling unit that services that area.
Kampfe added: “Plant operations have been deemed safe and the plant remains open. We are conducting a thorough review of this incident to determine its cause.”
