The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has cited Tyson Foods for a water violation that apparently killed a large number of fish and polluted Clear Creek between Monett and Pierce City.

According to the state water authorities, Tyson received a shipment of waste water containing Alimet, a liquid animal feed supplement, from another company-owned facility in Aurora, Missouri.

Tyson sent the shipment to its pre-treatment facility and later discharged the water to the local sewer system. This, the DNR suggested, caused operational difficulties at the Monett city treatment facility and killed fish along a six-mile stretch of Clear Creek.

The DNR added that the agency is conducting a hazardous waste investigation to determine whether additional violations occurred.

A spokesperson for Tyson told just-food that the firm is “working cooperatively with city and staate officials”.

“We’re very concerned about water quality and its impact on the surrounding environment. Water is a critical natural resource and we work to protect it at all of our locations. We’re awaiting additional discussions with the state and city so we can understand how our operations potentially played a role in what happened,” the spokesperson said.
