Unilever has increased the number of Hellmann’s mayonnaise lines sold in the US that are made with cage-free eggs.

Last year, Unilever began selling Hellmann’s Light that was made with eggs that were certified as cage-free by the American Humane Association.

The Anglo-Dutch consumer goods giant said yesterday (16 May) that two of its “signature recipes” – Hellmann’s Canola Cholesterol Free Mayonnaise and Hellmann’s Reduced Fat Mayonnaise with Olive Oil – now contain only cage-free eggs.

“More than ever before, consumers are attuned to what’s in their food and where it comes from,” said Hellmann’s senior brand manager Melissa Weingarten.

Unilever is aiming to use only cage-free eggs in its products worldwide, including Ben & Jerry’s ice cream as well as the Hellmann’s, Amora and Calvé mayonnaise brands.

According to the Unilever corporate website, some 98% of the eggs used in Ben & Jerry’s products worldwide are cage-free or free range. The eggs used in the Hellmann’s in the UK and Ireland have been cage-free – free range or barn – since 2008. By the end of 2009, the eggs used in the Amora and Calvé mayonnaise on sale in western Europe were cage-free.
