Unilever has set a date for the closure of its ice cream plant in the US state of Maryland.

The US giant will begin closing the Good Humor-Breyers Ice Cream plant in the town of Hagerstown in November. The move will ultimately lead to 437 workers being laid off when the factory formally closes in 2013.

The company had announced plans to close the factory two years ago but had not set an exact date.

A company spokesperson said yesterday (14 September): “In our original announcement dated 11 June 2009, we stated that plant production at our Hagerstown facility was expected to finish by the end of 2011, with the final plant closing expected to occur during that same time period. The timing has since changed and we now expect plant production to be completed by March 2013, with the final plant closing expected by August 2013.”
