Some 143m lb (64.9m kg) of products from Westland/Hallmark Meat Co, destined for school lunch programmes and major fast-food chains, have been recalled.
However, the US Department of Agriculture said the health hazard is minimal and no illnesses have been linked to the meat.
The recall, announced Sunday, will affect beef products dating to 1 February 2006 from Westland, which, the USDA said, did not routinely contact its veterinarian when cattle became non-ambulatory after passing inspection, violating health regulations.
Officials have suspended operations at the plant, which is also being investigated over alleged animal cruelty after a video appeared to show crippled and ill animals being prodded with a forklift truck, kicked, given electric shocks and sprayed with high-pressure water hoses by staff.

By GlobalDataTwo former employees were charged with animal cruelty on Friday.
James Reagan, chairman of the Beef Industry Food Safety Council, said: “I am dismayed at the inhumane handling of cattle that has resulted in the violation of food safety regulations. It is extremely unlikely that these animals were at risk of BSE because of the multiple safeguards, however, this action is necessary because plant procedures violated USDA regulations.”
‘Downer’ cattle, who lose the ability to walk, are at greater risk of contamination by E. coli, salmonella or contracting mad cow disease and should have been removed from the food supply chain or thoroughly inspected.
The company says it has now taken action to ensure all employees handle animals humanely.
No charges have been filed against Westland, but an investigation by federal authorities continues.
