Wal-Mart has confirmed it is evaluating new projects in Sacramento, California.

While director of community affairs, Steven Restivo, declined to reveal details on any specific projects in the local area, sources in the commercial real estate business say the retailer has been aggressively taking over local sites, mostly former grocery stores, ahead of a major Northern California roll-out of its smaller format.

The potential stores would be about 40,000 sq ft in size, a significant drop on its average 108,000 sq ft supercenters.

The move would be in-line with recent announcements. The company’s head of US operations, Eduardo Castro-Wright, recently affirmed its commitment to growing its US operations, adding that the company could pick up between US$80-100bn in additional sales in markets where it is currently under-represented, such as smaller formats.

Wal-Mart has recently been testing the similarly-sized Neighborhood Market concept, which analysts believe is set to be the subject of an expansion drive.
