“We think these stores can be part of the solution for residents who want more affordable options for a broad assortment of fresh groceries,” a Wal-Mart spokesperson told just-food. “The new stores will feature fresh produce, meats and dairy products, frozen foods, dry goods, pharmacy and consumables.” A typical Neighborhood Market store is about 42,000sq ft.

Last month, Wal-Mart indicated it would open 80 to 100 smaller stores this year, which would “primarily” be under its Neighborhood Market format, Bill Simon, president and CEO of the retailer’s US business, said.

“The Neighborhood Market format continues to deliver above-industry results, with approximately a 5% [increase in comparable-store sales] during the fourth quarter and positive traffic throughout the year,” Simon said as Wal-Mart announced its fourth-quarter and full-year results.
