Wal-Mart Stores has announced plans to expand in nine underprivileged urban areas throughout the US, where it claims it will provide jobs and offer support to the local business community.
“It’s about creating opportunity beyond the four walls of our stores,” said Wal-Mart vice chairman John Menzer. “And it’s about making unique contributions to the communities we serve, the millions of customers who rely on us and the thousands of associates we employ.”
Wal-Mart has said it will open stores in: Cleveland, Ohio; Decatur, Georgia; El Mirage, Arizona; Landover Hills, Maryland; Portsmouth, Virginia; Richmond, California; and Sanger, California.
Wal-Mart said that each store in these neighbourhoods will support local businesses and encourage economic development. The company will collaborate with local chambers of commerce, business groups, minority chambers of commerce and minority and women-owned businesses within these areas to deliver grants to these communities, the company said.
