US chewing gum company Wrigley has revealed plans to introduce magnolia bark extract to its Eclipse gum and mints range in a bid to combat bad breath.

The bark has been shown to kill the germs that cause bad breath. Magnolia bark extract, which has its origins in traditional Chinese medicine, will be introduced to brands including Spearmint, and new Fresh & Cool flavours of Eclipse gum. These new products will be hitting US shelves this summer.

“For Wrigley to offer this natural germ-killing ingredient is a breakthrough in the breath-freshening gum and mint categories,” said Paul Chibe, Wrigley’s VP of North American gum marketing. “Now people will get the best of both worlds in their favorite Eclipse gum and mints – great taste and the ability to help kill germs that cause bad breath.”
