People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) filed a lawsuit in the California Superior Court in Los Angeles against KFC and its parent company Yum Brands, seeking an injunction to stop what PETA says are deceptive statements on KFC’s website regarding how the fastfood firm treats its chickens, reported Reuters.
PETA claims that chickens bought from suppliers by KFC are abused through drugging, feeding and slaughter practices. The lawsuit opposes a statement on KFC’s website that the company’s guidelines for the treatment of chickens are designed “to ensure that all birds are handled humanely and suffer no pain.”
KFC spokesperson Bonnie Warshaurer said the company maintains that its information is truthful and accurate. “This is one in a continuing series of publicity stunts designed to mislead the public,” she was quoted by Reuters as saying.
