Natick, Mass.-based BJ’s Wholesale Club has posted sales for June up 14.9% to US$584m from US$508m in June 2001. Comparable club sales rose 4.1% for the month and have increased by 3.9% in the year-to-date.

Each of BJ’s major markets reported positive comparable club sales increases in June, with the highest increase in New England and lowest in the Baltimore/DC market. Comparable club sales increases were strongest in weeks one and five and softest in week three.


Gasoline sales had a slightly negative impact on comparable club sales due to price deflation.


Food categories with strong sales increases included beer and wine, liquor, pet foods, prepared foods, snacks, and water. Weaker food categories included cigarettes and dairy. Strong general merchandise categories included air conditioners and fans, automotive, domestics, jewelry, prerecorded media, lawn and garden and residential furniture. Weaker categories of general merchandise included computer equipment, men’s apparel, office supplies and tires.
