The United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), which represents around 70,000 southern California grocery workers, has vowed not to give in to employer demands over health care contributions.

The workers are on strike over employers’ plans to make staff contribute towards rising health care costs. The strike is in its second week and, so far, there are no talks scheduled between the union and grocery retailers Kroger, Albertsons and Safeway, reported Reuters.
“The union remains ready and available to talk any time to employers about costs containment and cost savings, but workers are not going to give up their health care,” UFCW spokesman Greg Denier told Reuters.
