One lone case of BSE found among US cattle has had a significant effect on American meat eating, according to a recent study.

The Harvard School of Public Health survey of just over one thousand Americans found that 16% say they or someone in their family has stopped ordering beef at fast food restaurants because of reports about BSE, while 14% say that same concern has led them or a family member to stop buying beef at the grocery store.

The study also found that 27% mistakenly believe that mad cow disease has been found in humans in the US.
