US banana supplier Chiquita is not planning to produce bananas that taste of other fruits, contrary to media reports.

Reports earlier this week citing an Associated Press interview with CEO Fernando Aguirre suggested that the company was investigating the possibility of growing bananas that taste of other fruit.


However, Chiquita’s director of corporate communications, Mike Mitchell, has said the company is investigating new varieties of banana, which may differ in texture and taste, but does not plan to inject other flavours into bananas, reported the Progressive Grocer. New varieties marketed by the company in the future may include sweeter or creamier bananas.
