Researchers at leading banana producer Chiquita are investigating the possibility of growing bananas that taste of other fruit.

In an interview with the Associated Press, CEO Fernando Aguirrie said it was part of the company’s ambition of increasing the appeal of bananas and encouraging them to pay more for them.

Aguirrie declined to say which flavours the company’s researchers were focusing on, but he mentioned that a larger, creamier or sweeter banana might be possible.

The bananas would not be genetically modified. It is hoped that they will be ready for consumer trials within the next year or so.
