Discussing a dietary and health study involving 75,000 female nurses and 38,000 male health professional, Dr Frank Speizer of Harvard Medical School explained the importance of the foods to scientists at the Institute of Food Technologists on Monday. Speizer said that nutrients such as potassium, vitamin C and folic acid, which are all found in orange juice, might help protect against cardiovascular disease.

“Citrus is a powerhouse of cardio-protective substances,” agreed Steven Nagy, a scientist at Florida’s Department of Citrus. Nagy continued by highlighting the role of orange juice in combating viruses, inflammation, cell damage and blood clots.

Orange juice is also useful in fighting bad cholesterol levels, said Elzbieta Kurowska of KGK Synergize Inc. She pointed to a study that suggests that drinking just 24 ounces of orange juice a day can increase HDL (good) cholesterol by 21% while reducing the ratio of LDL (bad) cholesterol by 16%.
