An American consumer group wants the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce sodium content in processed foods and require health warnings on packaged salt.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) wants to slash the sodium content by 50% within a decade. CSPI says the government should act because of “widespread disease and death”, citing estimates that reducing salt in packaged and restaurant foods might save 150,000 lives annually.

Specifically addressed were French fries at fastfood chains like McDonald’s, which it said serve fries containing salt when they arrive frozen, and have more added after cooking.
