It cites University of Texas research showing that curcumin, the yellow pigment found in curry ingredient tumeric, slows melanoma cell growth and stimulates the death of tumour cells.
The study in ‘Cancer’ shows that curcumin also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Crucially, it stimulates apoptosis, which is an intracell message telling cells of all types to destroy themselves. The researchers had treated three melanoma cell lines with curcumin at different doses and different periods of time. Follow up studies investigating the effects of curcumin in animals with melanoma are planned, as are clinical trials.
