Researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine launched the tea as a test product in Colorado a fortnight ago, and the company behind it, Brassica Protection Products (BPP), has reported huge nationwide interest.

Brassica Tea contains the antioxidant SGSTM (sulforaphane) extracted from broccoli. Sulforaphane is the natural antioxidant found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables that boost the body’s natural defence systems that inactivate free radicals. One cup of Brassica tea contains the equivalent amount of sulforaphane to a three-ounce serving of broccoli.

BPP has had to put direct orders of the tea on hold, in order to continue supplying the stores in Colorado where the tea is being test-marketed on an exclusive basis.

BPP president Tony Talalay said that it could take several months before Brassica Tea will again be available nationwide because it takes significant time to grow the special seeds needed to produce and extract the SGS.

He did add however that, in the meantime, consumers are turning to the company’s flagship product, BroccoSproutsR. Available in fresh produce sections of supermarkets around the country, BroccoSprouts are three-day-old baby broccoli licensed and patented by Johns Hopkins. Each ounce of BroccoSprouts delivers the same amount of sulforaphane as 1 1/4 pounds of adult broccoli.

“The interest in the tea has sparked a jump in BroccoSprouts sales. People who are unable to buy Brassica Tea are turning to BBP’s BroccoSprouts as a great alternative source of SGS,” added Talay.
