US grocery retailer Safeway has reached a tentative agreement with unionised workers at its Chicago-based Dominick’s unit who had been threatening to strike.

The new contract, which contains all the terms and conditions of the previous contract together with a bonus for members, includes a commitment by Safeway to try to sell the Dominick’s unit. The contract is subject to a vote by the union’s membership.

The 9,000 workers had voted to strike to back their demands for higher wages and healthcare benefits. The union accused Safeway of blaming its workers for the company’s management mistakes, reported Reuters.
