Eating broccoli and tomatoes together may provide a greater health benefit in terms of protection from prostate cancer than if the two are eaten separately.

According to cancer researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana, the research backs up the idea that certain compounds in different foods work together to improve or protect health, reported Reuters.

“We decided to look at these foods in combination because we believed it was a way to learn more about real diets eaten by real people,” said John Erdman, the professor who led the study.

Tomatoes are believed to protect against prostate cancer due to the lycopene they contain, while broccoli is thought to help protect against cancer due to the glucosinolates it contains.

“Separately, these two foods appear to have enormous cancer-fighting potential. Together, they bring out the best in each other and maximize the cancer-fighting effect,” Erdman was quoted by Reuters as saying.
