Ecolab Inc has filed a petition with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposing that the food additive regulations be amended to provide for the safe use of a mixture of peroxyacetic acid, octanoic acid, acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, peroxyoctanoic acid, and 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid as an antimicrobial agent on meat parts, trim and organs.

The FDA, which gave notice of the petition under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, will now assess the potential environmental effect of allowing this mixture to be used.
Comments are invited from the public with regard to the environmental assessment by 13 March 2002, in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The assessment is now on public display at the FDA’s Dockets Management Branch.
