A farmer in Shipshewana, Indiana, has been handed down a sentence after he was convicted of tampering with milk he sold to a cheese factory.
John Bontrager put pine-scented cleaner in milk he sold to the Deutsch Käse Haus near Middlebury, resulting in the destruction of 75,000 pounds of cheese.
Bontrager acknowledged he had deliberately added the cleaner to two batches of milk, as he knew this would reduce its bacterial level and lead to higher payments. Workers at the factory noticed a batch of cheese smelled and tasted of chemicals and prompted an investigation.
Judge J. Scott VanDerbeck gave Bontrager a suspended sentence of 28 months. He will also have to serve six months of probation and pay US$329 in court costs and fine.
