The United States Food and Drug Administration is planning to authorise US food manufacturers to make health claims stating that sucralose can help prevent tooth decay, because it is a safe alternative to sugar.
The move would add sucralose to a list of other noncariogenic carbohydrate sweeteners about which manufacturers can make similar claims. In papers sent to the World Trade Organisation, the FDA said it was responding to a request from McNeil Nutritionals on the issue. Said the US agency: “Sucralose is minimally fermented, relative to sugar, by oral microorganisms and thus does not contribute to production of organic acids by plaque bacteria”.
