The agreement, which becomes effective in October, involves the supply of candies, cookies and some refrigerated and frozen food products.
The previous suppliers to the Minneapolis-based Target were Supervalu for frozen and refrigerated foods and Tricor for candy.
Polly Deane, a spokeswoman for Eden Prairie-based Supervalu, insisted that the losses to be incurred after pulling out of the bidding for the business will be offset by Supervalu’s latest supply arrangement for grocery, frozen, refrigerated and related consumer items to 37 SuperTarget stores.
A spokesman from Fleming stressed that the Target deal will not affect the company’s dealings with Kmart, the retailer that filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code in January.
