The 44-year-old Anthony plant, situated about 15 miles north of El Paso in Texas, is the site for the production of the Old El Paso food range. General Mills acquired the site when it bought the Pillsbury Co on 31 October last year. The company has blamed the closure on declining sales in the area of Mexican food ingredients.

Production will be consolidated into General Mills’ other plants.

The news has angered many in Anthony. The Mayor of the town Art Franco said: “[the brand is] associated with Anthony and El Paso. It’s part of us. It’s kind of frustrating and depressing it’s not made in Anthony anymore.”

However, John Hadjimarcou, an associate professor of marketing for the University of Texas at El Paso, told the El Paso Times that “most people don’t care where a product comes from”.
