US dairy company Glanbia Foods has made an agreement with state regulators in Idaho to pay for intentionally releasing too much wastewater from its cheese plant.

The company, a division of Irish food giant Glanbia, is to pay up to US$32,000 for this month, which represents the maximum penalty that can be considered by the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, reported the Associated Press.
The waste from Glanbia Foods includes water and solids from milk processing which is spread over farmland. The company agreed to pay $1,000 in fines for each day it exceeds the volume of wastewater allowed by its state permit.
The company also has to commit $40,000 in financial assurance in case private wells belonging to six neighbours become contaminated and drinking water must be arranged through another source.
