“In cases like this, it is difficult to decide which offense should be attacked first,” stated Father Richard Welch, CSSR, JCD, President of Human Life International, the world’s largest pro-life, pro-faith, pro-family apostolate. “Is it the racism inherent in promoting abortion and contraception in primarily minority neighborhoods? Is it the duplicity of marketing contraception without mentioning its abortifacient properties? Or is it the sheer vulgarity and anti-family attitude of giving children access to condoms along with their French fries? Ohio’s Planned Parenthood may be big on the planning, but they don’t offer much support when it comes to parenting.”
Fr. Welch referred to a recent campaign to promote emergency contraception (known as the morning-after pill) by Planned Parenthood of Summit, Portage, and Medina Counties in Ohio. Using government Title X funds, and with the aid of local agencies and organizations, bags containing promotional materials for Planned Parenthood were left on the doors of selected neighborhoods in Ohio. Among the materials included was a Planned Parenthood keychain that holds a condom and emergency numbers to be used “when the condom breaks.” Although there were several versions of the promotional packages, the first wave of bags was distributed largely among minority and disadvantaged neighborhoods in Akron. Attached to the bags-which were distributed regardless of the many children in these neighborhoods-was a yellow coupon offering a dozen condoms and a free McDonald’s gift certificate that could be redeemed at a listed Planned Parenthood location.

A Planned Parenthood spokesperson claimed that the campaign was quite popular and that distribution of the bags would not be universal, but was instead left in the hands of participating organizations and agencies to distribute to those “who need it.” Although McDonald’s is used as a selling point in Planned Parenthood’s contraception and condom promotion, the company is not a participant in the campaign.
“No matter how they try, Planned Parenthood cannot escape its racist pro- death roots,” continued Fr. Welch. “Having sprung from the racist dreams of a woman determined to apply abortion and contraception to eugenics and ethnic cleansing, Planned Parenthood remains true to the same strategy today. Here, they are taking aim at families and children in a way that they would never dare to in the same neighborhoods their doctors occupy. Offering condoms with Big Macs. What’s next? Free diaphragms with baseball gloves? A Barbie outfit with each late-term abortion? This seduction of young people into a life of promiscuity is a shocking assault on families, values, virtue, and life, and we should not stand for it. McDonald’s-which claims to reach out to families, children, and minorities-must repudiate this evil use of its name and reputation. And neither should the rest of us stand idly by when such outrages are committed. When we tolerate such attacks on any family, we are inviting them on our own.”
