Sugar processor Imperial Sugar Company has announced that it has resumed refining operations at the Gramercy, Louisiana cane sugar refinery, located approximately 20 miles northwest of New Orleans on the Mississippi River.

Limited shipping has commenced and resumption of normal shipping operations is dependent on the availability of transportation equipment and fuel. Operations at the refinery were suspended on Saturday morning, 27 August due to the approach of Hurricane Katrina.

“Fortunately most of our associates fared relatively well and therefore we have been able to staff key positions on all shifts,” said Paul Durlacher, Imperial’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “We are working with our customers to prioritise shipments as production and transportation capacity allows.”
