US jam and peanut butter maker JM Smucker has been sued over its “100% Fruit” jam label.
A woman in California filed the proposed class-action lawsuit claiming that the label was misleading.
The lawsuit alleges that tests on the company’s “Simply 100% Fruit” strawberry jam revealed that the product contained less than 30% actual strawberries, while the blueberry version contained 43% berries, reported Reuters.
According to the company’s website, the strawberry jam also contains fruit syrup, lemon juice concentrate, fruit pectin, red grape juice concentrate and natural flavours.
Allan Sigal, attorney for the lead plaintiff, said that if the lawsuit is successful, the company could be forced to refund at least a dollar to anyone who purchased the product in the last four years or contribute to a charity.
