KFC, America’s largest chicken chain, says it will be changing some slaughter practices in order to treat its chickens more humanely.

The Louisville, Kentucky-based company said that it has adopted eight guidelines for farmers that address breeding, hatching and raising of poultry, including adequate growth space and routine inspections of facilities.

They also involve improvements to the education and training of poultry supplier personnel and the creation of “appropriate comfort and shelter” for birds.

Animal welfare group The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) does not take much stock in the new announcement, however. It alleges that that the new promised standards will still inflict much “pain” to chickens.
