A survey carried out by Suzanne Teuber of the University of California, Davis, found that 5% of people allergic to nuts and seeds reported they had suffered an allergic reaction after a kiss. The survey looked at 379 patients with food allergies, 20 of whom had suffered an immune response after a kiss.
Most of the time this response was not serious – just a bit of swelling or irritation “in the area kissed,” the California scientists wrote in The New England Journal of Medicine. However, the doctors related one instance when a child had needed emergency assistance after his mother had kissed him on the cheek after tasting a pot of pea soup.
And good dental hygiene may not be the answer: four adults reported reactions even though their partners had brushed their teeth before ‘getting romantic,’ reported the Gazette newspaper.
