US food giant Kraft has become the latest target of Genetically Engineered Food Alert, a consumer lobby group that aims to reduce the use of genetically modified ingredients in food. The lobby group has identified a number of Kraft products which contain GM corn and soy, and is going into battle to raise consumer awareness.

The products include Boca Burgers, Post Blueberry Morning cereal, and Stove Top Stuffing. Supporters of the anti-GM group will be asked to distribute leaflets and petitions to raise awareness of what it terms the “public-health and environmental concerns” linked with GM foods. The campaign has been dubbed ‘Genetically Krafted Foods: Not in My Kitchen’.

“This is a grass-roots effort to inform the public that they are consuming genetically engineered foods and to also demand that Kraft remove these ingredients,” said Matt Rand, spokesman for coalition member National Environmental Trust.

This latest campaign follows a similar action against Campbell Soup, which failed to result in the soup giant removing GM ingredients from its products. However, the group was also involved in the December 2000 campaign against Kraft, when it revealed that a brand of Kraft taco shells contained GM StarLink corn unapproved for human consumption. Kraft promptly withdrew the affected product from retail shelves amidst a huge blaze of negative publicity.

This time it is not thought that the group has uncovered GM ingredients unauthorised for use in human foods. Kraft maintains its products only contain approved ingredients. “The FDA (Food and Drug Administration), the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization have all looked closely at biotech ingredients and concluded that they’re safe,” said Kraft spokesman Michael Mudd.
