US grocery retailer Kroger is testing sections where all items are priced at US$1, in order to try to compete against discount retailers.

Cincinnati-based Kroger is testing large dollar sections in two Houston stores, as well as trying out dollar aisles in around a dozen stores in western states.

“It’s a system we’re testing in markets that compete against other dollar stores,” company spokesman Gary Rhodes was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

Kroger’s dollar sections include items such as food and greetings cards.
