The Court will now be able to review penalties assessed against self-insurers for late benefits payments in its decision-making process. The change followed arguments by for advocates in favour of stricter standards for self-insured employers, notably those in the state’s meatpacking sector.
The advocates for change argued that: “Inadequate government oversight of employers who are approved as self-insurers provides the single biggest opportunity for employer abuse of Nebraska’s workers’ compensation system”.
