The Nebraska Workers’ Compensation Court yesterday [Thursday] approved an amendment allowing it greater scope for approving or renewing self-insured status to employers. Advocates for injured meatpackers say the amendment is a step in the right direction.

The Court will now be able to review penalties assessed against self-insurers for late benefits payments in its decision-making process. The change followed arguments by for advocates in favour of stricter standards for self-insured employers, notably those in the state’s meatpacking sector.


The advocates for change argued that: “Inadequate government oversight of employers who are approved as self-insurers provides the single biggest opportunity for employer abuse of Nebraska’s workers’ compensation system”.
