Despite the popularity of designer diets such as Atkins or the Zone, many consumers still prefer to fight the flab by following a regime they put together themselves.

New research from NPD Group shows that a quarter of US consumers have tried a diet that they have devised themselves, while almost 7% are following one right now. In contrast, some 17% of Americans claim to have tried the Atkins diet, while just 4% are doing so at the moment, reported Reuters.

Many are trying their own diet that incorporates elements of popular published diets. For instance, they are reducing carbohydrate consumption or incorporating higher levels of protein than usual.

NPD boss Harry Balzer warned companies against investing too heavily in low-carb products, stating his belief that the trend will eventually go the way of all other trends.
