“We’re still a few years away, frankly, from having a trait that is ready in wheat,” Monsanto wheat expert Michael Doane was quoted by Reuters as saying.

Doane said that although the company has the technology to make wheat plants that resist Monsanto’s popular herbicide Roundup, the company is still working on many variables, including what variety of wheat to use. Monsanto is also assessing the effect of its Roundup Ready wheat on typical crop rotation strategies.

Doane said the company, which is facing fierce industry opposition to the commercialisation of GM wheat, is working to win over critics and key importers of US wheat by holding a series of meetings with food processors in Europe and Japan.
