McDonald’s still records greater sales than the privately held sandwich shop chain, and in terms of global presence it far surpasses the number of outlets, however Subway welcomed the news of its numerical dominance in the US.

Les Winograd, a Subway spokesman, told Fox News: “”We knew that we were getting close to McDonald’s, but we had to wait until McDonald’s released its information.”

Including satellite locations, shops at gas stations, schools, sports arenas and other smaller outlets, the Milford-based sandwich chain now boosts 13,247 stores in the US, after opening 904 last year. A count bought McDonald’s in at 148 outlets less on 31 December.

Fred DeLuca established Subway in 1965.
