Sales for the week ending 13 April were 2.5% higher than any previous single week. Sales for the four weeks ending 13 April were 81% stronger than the comparable four-week period six months ago. Same store sales increased 78% in that same four-week comparison to six months ago.

Mike Spindler, president of MyWebGrocer, attributes the sales growth to a combination of increasing consumer interest in convenience and the efforts by participating Supermarkets to grow this business channel.

“Consumers want this channel as an alternative to their weekly errand running, which has become more and more a chore,” explained Spindler: “70-80% of our client’s customers are incremental to that supermarket. About half of those incremental customers are trading up from low-price retailers such as Super-Wal-Mart. They are consciously trading price for increased convenience.

“At the same time, we see uneven growth patterns among our Supermarket Clients. Those who stay focused both on execution and marketing are doubling or tripling their business from six months ago. Those who are either not executing or not marketing are showing weaker or even flat sales,” he added.
