The National Food Processors Association (NFPA) will host two briefings in September – one for industry members and one for the media – on a new program to coordinate food safety audits of suppliers on behalf of food processors.
On September 20, NFPA will host a briefing in Chicago for professionals who conduct independent food safety and quality system audits to provide information on NFPA’s supplier audit program. The program will be formally announced at a media briefing to be held at NFPA’s headquarters on Washington, D.C. on September 27.

“NFPA is well into the design phase of this new program, which is designed to enhance food safety standards and create efficiencies in the way audits are currently conducted for suppliers,” said NFPA Executive Vice President Kelly Johnston. “We believe the program has great potential to benefit everyone in the industry, from suppliers to processors and independent auditors.”
NFPA, the nation’s largest trade group representing food makers and the industry’s voice on scientific, regulatory and technical issues, formed a 27-company task force earlier this year to establish audit standards, qualifications for independent auditors, and processes to coordinate the scheduling of audits and distribution of reports.
Both the media briefing in Washington, D.C. and the briefing for audit companies and independent professionals in Chicago will provide information on the program and the task force’s progress. Input from independent auditors, as well as support for the emerging NFPA program, will also be solicited at the Chicago briefing.
Audit companies and independent professionals who wish to attend the briefing in Chicago should RSVP to Marlene English at NFPA by e-mail (menglish@nfpa-food.org), telephone (202-639-5940) or fax (202-637-8476).
