Health officials for New York State have been cracking down on the sale of some Indian sweets, which they say do not carry sufficient ingredient warnings.

Many of the homemade sweets contain pistachio nuts and almonds, which can cause anaphylaxis in those with nut allergies. In the US it is mandatory for any products containing nuts to carry a warning label for customers about the product’s ingredients.

Some shop-owners in New York disagree with health officials, saying that asking people to label homemade sweets is ridiculous.

Anaphylaxis can be very serious as it can cause swelling of the tongue or throat which can result in suffocation. Around 100 people in the US die of anaphylaxis each year.
