The closures would be in addition to the 16 stores the company announced three weeks ago that it wants to close by the end of the year.

Closing the 25 stores would lead to the loss of around 940 jobs, bringing the total number of job cuts for the combined closures to nearly 2,000, reported the Associated Press.

Penn Traffic said the closures are a necessary part of the company’s efforts to emerge from bankruptcy.

The retailer, which filed for bankruptcy at the end of May, operates 211 supermarkets in six states under the P&C, Big Bear, Quality and Bi-Lo banners.
