Hanover Foods Corp, a Centre Hall, Pa., establishment, is voluntarily recalling about 132,000 pounds of frozen chicken pie products because of misbranding, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The products are considered misbranded because they contain only 10.5% chicken, rather than the 14% required by FSIS’ standard of identity for chicken pie. The problem was discovered by an FSIS inspector.


The products being recalled are cases containing six 2 lb. cartons of “Myers Bake & Serve CHICKEN PIE With White Chicken.” Each case and individual carton bears one of the following package codes:

Each case bears the establishment code “P-462” inside the USDA seal of inspection. However, each individual carton bears the establishment code “P-20818” inside the USDA seal of inspection.

The product was produced between March 28, 2000 and Jan. 8, 2002, and distributed to retail and institutional establishments in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia.


“FSIS wants consumers to be aware of the recall,” said Margaret O’K. Glavin, acting FSIS administrator. “Consumers who have concerns about the product should return it to the point of purchase.”
