Yesterday (5 October), the US Congress formed legislation on the export sales of food and medicine to Cuba that might finally lead to an easing of a 40-year economic embargo.

The agreement between Republican and Democratic legislators will now be voted on by the House of Representatives and the Senate, and leading proponent Republican George Nethercutt has announced: “I have great confidence there will be immediate sales.”

If the move is passed, food and medicine will soon be sold to the island, without the involvement of private or public US funding, and certain restrictions will be imposed on US tourism within Cuba.
